The accuracy required by roll grinders has increased rapidly over the years. Very low vibrations levels may already lead to unacceptable chatter marks or shadows on the surface of the rolls. Nearby steel or paper mills, traffic on neighbouring roads and rails may cause such vibrations; also cranes can be a cause, especially when they set the rolls into the roll stocks. Today all roll grinders generally require spring support systems. Not only the selection of the proper spring system is important, but also the dimensioning of the spring-supported foundation block. This block also has to be suitable for different roll measures.
The foundation block should also provide:
- A bending natural frequency high enough to prevent resonance
- Sufficient dynamic inertia
- Sufficient mass, so that the tilting of the block – due to different roll weights and moving loads – stays within permissible limits
